The field of Performance Studies emerged in the 1970s as collaboration between director Richard Schechner and anthropologist Victor Turner.  The discipline was inaugurated as such in 1980 at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University under the direction of Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett.  The Department of Performance Studies at New York University is the first in the world dedicated to the study of performance as an object of analysis.
